The ISAF Mission: Background and Achievements

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was a NATO-led, UN-mandated mission that operated from August 2003 to December 2014. Its objective was to assist Afghan authorities in maintaining security, developing national defense capabilities, and preventing Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven for terrorist organizations.

ISAF represented NATO’s largest and most complex operation in Asia and the Middle East, involving over 130,000 troops at its peak and supported by 50 contributing nations.
